7/15

  • Good clear opening - interesting to focus on male Muslim representation.
  • Institution point (BBC 1/ BBC 3) is an interesting and probably accurate statement but not entirely clear how it fits into the issue/investigation.
  • Good knowledge of the text and characters and this is clearly communicated to audience.
  • Issues of reputation are raised but need to take this further by the wider cultural issues.
  • Can we link Islamophobia to this? Surely this is based on a true story and therefore not a case of negative representation?
  • Stereotypes of Asian fathers - are they all negative?  Strictness - Subjective opinion surely?
  • Presentation loses focus a little - doesn't quite get into the depth required for A2, particularly in terms of culture, wider context and Islamophobia.
  • Own opinion is offered at the end but again this will need to be developed through research to take on more of the bigger media issues/debates.
  • Q + A - Very relevant first question - The link between Islamophobia + the text. Question is not answered with clarity - lacking the insight/depth as outlined above.
  • Another good Question - the answer picking up on representation of men is interesting - but their wasn't particularly addressed in the presentation.
  • Q + A is a real struggle - not able to engage with good questions at a sophisticated level and will need to develop this for the investigation.
WWW - I believe that the ignite presentation that I did was better than I thought it would be. Simply because that when I was rehearsing the presentation, I would get the timing right but when it came to the actual presentation, I did it really well.
-Another thing that I thought I did really well is that I had a good opening to the presentation which made the audience seem a lot more interested, e.g. I started to talk about the movie at the beginning and only showed pictures and a small amount of words.

EBI  - Personally, I think that overall, I could have done a lot better. My main problem was the ending when the 'Q and A' took place. I feel that when I was being questioned, I didn't have any good answers to have a real debate with the audience. Also, there were some questions where I wouldn't even have an answered for it and would struggle to give an opinion.

One of the ways the presentation is linked to my critical investigation is through the actual debate. My debate is about the representations on male Muslims; this is the main topic I am going to be discussing in the critical investigation since there is a great link between the text and this debate. Another thing I will be looking at it is the relationship of BBC Three with the text. For example, I will be looking at the target audience for BBC Three and what the target audience for the text (Murdered by my father) is. Furthermore, in my presentation, the debates that I was looking at 'Representation of male Muslim' and 'Islamophobia'. However, I am thinking of changing the debate to 'The representation of men is the Asian community'. This is because I believe that there isn't a great link between the text and Islamophobia and I believe that I can talk more about the Asian community.

MIGRAIN key concept research

Research

This is the trailer of the text. It shows all the main characters that have featured in the short movie and gives away some of the things that have been said by the characters.

The picture shown above is a review on the text. As you can see, the person who wrote this review found this movie very touching will most likely was the same with a lot of other viewers. He also gave a 9/10 rating which is extremely good for the movie itself; if people were to go onto IMDB and look at this review, it would benefit the people who made the movie as it would make many others more aware of the short film.

Media text:
Murdered by my Father
Media Debate/Issue:
Islamophobia/Representation of Men

Media Representation

The person that I will be looking at is the father in the film. In this text, the father in the movie has been represented as a very strict and controlling person, i.e. he would control what his daughter does so that the family reputation will not be ruined. Another protagonist I will be looking at is the main protagonist in the movie. She is the one who is being forced to do things that she doesn't want to do, mainly getting married to someone she doesn't want to. I picked this because this is a typical thing that happens in the Asian community. The Asian fathers would control their children. In my opinion, I believe that this is an accurate representation of girls and fathers in the Asian community. A lot of the fathers would like to control their daughters mainly to protect them. However, don't give them enough freedom to do whatever they want.
  • What opportunities exist for self-representation by the subject?
The self representation that has been shown in this subject is through the daughter.

Media Languages and Forms

  • What are the denotative and connotative levels of meaning?
  • What is the significance of the text’s connotations?
Throughout the short movie, as an audience, we get a sense of feeling that the father protagonist in the text is shown to be a psycho. Whenever, Salma (the main protagonist) did something that wasn't approved by the father, he would usually go silent, wonder into space, put his finger on his lip or scratch his head and just think; it almost seems as if he is going to go ballistic. At the end of the short film, the father had killed Salma by strangling her and covering her face with a carrier bag. Once he did kill her, he pretended as nothing had happen and everything was normal; he would start to tidy up the table and check the curtains etc.

Throughout the film, there was hardly any background sounds apart from when there was music playing in the party. However, at the end, they would play this slow and soothing, diegetic sound when the father had killed himself. Furthermore, once he had thrown himself over the balcony, there was a very long panning movement that was going around the corner and to the place that he had landed. It showed the setting of the place, where he fell and the flats all in one camera movement. It first started of in a panning movement then went into a tilt movement.
Typically, if you are brought up in an Asian family whether coming from Pakistan or India, a girl is always meant to be wearing a sari. However, in this movie, the main protagonist was wearing more modernised clothing which could suggest why the father of the protagonist was acting different with her.

The picture shown above is of the father (left), the main protagonist (centre) and her boyfriend. I personally believe that this is a very strong image which also represents the movie itself. On the left, the father is shown to be looking at his daughter in a disgusted way. This is because of the fact that she is going against what he wants for her. On the right, her boyfriend is looking at the main protagonist in a worried way because he thinks that the father is going to do something to the main protagonist and he does, by killing her at the end.
Anyone will be able to tell that the character in the middle is the main protagonist because of the fact that she is standing in the centre of the photo and also that the characters on each side of her and looking at her, symbolising that it is all based around her.

Narrative

The narrative itself is based on a true story. This text was based in West London with scenes coming from many well recognised places, for example Southall Broadway. Since this text is based on a Asian background they filmed it in an Asian based setting to give it that extra feel that it's to do with South Asia and their lifestyle.
The narrative itself is about this girl who wants to be with her boyfriend and wants to leave with him but her dad made a promise to her mum that he needs to get her daughter married, after she dies. Therefore, this has been stuck in his head and is only trying to do the best for her daughter not knowing that she is with someone else. If anyone has found out about her, then this would put a bad name on the family.
Judging who the heroes and villains are in the text was very simple at the very end. It turned out that the villain of the text was the main protagonists dad and the hero was the protagonists boyfriend. The father was the villain because at the end of the text, he was the one who killed the protagonist. However, there wasn't any hero to this text because this short film had ended on a sad note with the girl dying and the father committing suicide.
A lot of the text was shown in council estate flats which suggests that this family didn't come from a wealthy background. It also suggests why this was shown on BBC Three as it all seems very low brow and not really appealing to the higher demographic groups.
  • What is the role of such features as sound, music, iconography, genre, mise-en-scene, editing etc within the narrative?
  • What are the major themes of the narrative? What values/ideologies does it embody?

Genre

This text belongs to the genre 'Drama'.
The major iconography shown in the text is the father and his daughter.
The text itself has got many different conventions within it. For example, there is a huge difference between the two main protagonists (Salma and Shahzad); They both want what's best for themselves and therefore, leads to both of them not agreeing with each other and always leading to arguments.
In the text, the main protagonist is known by Shahzad and Adeel Akhtar in real life. In addition, this actor hasn't really had a key role in any of the films or texts he's played a part in; he has mainly been associated with comedy movies in contrast to this drama text. An example of a text he has been associated with is 'The Dictator' or even 'Four Lions'. Therefore, this was something different for the main protagonist and shows that he isn't strongly associated with this genre. Also, the director of this text is Bruce Goodison. He is a person who is strongly associated to this genre as he has directed a lot of other movies within this genre. An example of this is 'Flight 93: The Flight That Fought Back' which is well known and was published over a century ago stating that this director has been associated within this genre for a very long time. The writer of this text is Vinay Patel. Patel has written only 3 texts including 'Murdered by my Father' and isn't to important in this genre; he is still a growing writer as he hasn't got more experience at this moment of time.

Media Institutions

This text was produced and published by the BBC. It was shown on the 29th of March 2016 on BBC Three. It was first shown on BBC Three but now is available to watch on demand (BBC iPlayer).
Personally, the text itself hasn't made a big difference on the institution itself. This is because of the fact that the BBC, itself, is already a huge institution in Britain. Therefore, this text doesn't have a big impact on how the BBC is being viewed. However, it shows that the BBC is becoming more and more modernized as it is showing texts that shows personal identity in the audiences, e.g. this text was based on a true story that had happened in the past. However, this text was written by someone who wasn't from an extremely rich background, therefore the BBC had produced his text and this is a message to the audience that if they haven't a good text that people can enjoy, then they may potentially be lucky as the BBC may do the same for them.
The BBC is a public service broadcaster and is known as the oldest national broadcasting organisation. The fact that it is a public service institution means that a lot of the funds come from the government.
Furthermore, the government owns the BBC and is also controlled by them. Everyone has got a say, e.g. the Parliament  are the ones who agree on the fees that have been gone out by the BBC to the different countries who also broadcast BBC.

Media Values and Ideology

The main ideology, in this text, is that the father in Asian communities are always too strict and want the best for their children without getting their children having their say. This is an ideology as there have been many cases where this has been represented, e.g. on social media etc. Another thing is that the text that I am looking at was based on a real story. Therefore, the major assumption shown is that the majority of the Asian fathers are too strict and control their children's, especially their daughters.
Another ideology that has been indicated in this text is that male protagonist are still represented as a powerful structure. This is also shown with the way that the men are controlling the women. If the male protagonist said something, the female protagonist would usually obey their commands and suggests that they are very weak in front of the men. This is a very typical ideology that is replicated in a lot of texts nowadays.

Media Audience

The target audience of this particular text would be from the ages 16-34 years and in the demographic groups of C2 - E. This is because of the fact that BBC Three have written on the website their target audience is aimed for the ages written above. Furthermore, I have chosen this demographic group mainly because this is a text that is involving young teenagers and it would show similarities between the audience and actors. Audiences that are classed in A - C1 would concentrate on watching BBC 1 or even BBC 2 because it shows the news, lifestyle channels and much more which is known to be more High brow than the low brow BBC Three. The psychographic group that I have chosen for this text are mainstreamers because of the fact that they are trying to find security and this text is all about being safe etc.
The audience themselves will most likely receive the text when they are either watching TV and flicking through the channels or they will most certainly find this text on social media sites, e.g. via Twitter or Facebook. This is very common as many people like to share things that they may have recently done. The fact that this will be found on social media suggests that this is a typical low brow type of text which may only attract young teenagers who are currently studying.
In my opinion, I believe that the target audience size will be very large since it will be available on demand and it was first shown on TV during peak times. This allowed there to be a greater size of audience.
Throughout the text, there were no scenes where the audience would take it amusing. This text was very serious throughout and the audiences would also feel sorry for the protagonist. Therefore, there would be no audience pleasures from this text. However, there may be signs were they have used 'Uses & Gratifications' personal identity because the main character was be controlled by the other protagonist. At the end, the female protagonist was murdered by her father which was based on a true story which is why some of the audience may think that they may see themselves in the text due to the fact that they have been forced throughout their life.
I personally believe that this is a strong piece of text and will be very inspiring to the audience. This is because of the fact that people can learn from this text on how they act others in life. In this text, a lot of violence was shown which gives the audience a very negative feel as this is based on a real story and therefore, will change the audience and myself on the way we act with others.
  • What assumptions about the audience’s characteristics are implicit within the text?
  • What assumptions about the audience are implicit in the text’s scheduling or positioning?
